Happy Birthday to me! I turned 30 the other day. It was a celebration that lasted like 5 days. Yes...it was quite the Part-ayyyy! Sarah, my childhood friend from AZ who now lives in Brooklyn, and I went to Coney Island to start off the celebration. We had Nathan's World Famous Hot Dogs and then walked around Astroland and did a couple rides. We walked the beach and boardwalk. I had to treat Sarah to one of my favorite things in the world...a Mango with lemon juice, salt, and chili. YUM! There are always people selling them on the beaches and streets out here. You will know it is them when you see them walk by with a box that has a bunch of Mangoes cut in a manner so that they look like a flower and are sitting on top of a long stick. Anyway...we chomped one of those and then went to the Coney Island Freak Show also known as the SideShow. It was the BEST! I loved the fire eating, sword swallowing, human blockhead, and of course the werewolf man. We took the train back to Sarah's place and got fixed up to go to dinner. She treated me to a very nice dinner at new place in Brooklyn called The Farm on Adderley. I stayed over at her place and we made homemade ice cream out of her Ben & Jerry's book and chatted and watched movies like we had done for our birthdays throughout the last 26 years.
Jose and I continued the Part-ayy but seeing a Cirque Dreams Illumination show in Atlantic City and doing a bunch of shopping at the Outlet Malls in Riverhead, Long Island. We were in NJ and drove over to Philadelphia for crabs but didn't end up finding any places that served crab like were were used to in Maryland. We headed back to NY to continue the celebration. We went to dinner at a place called Tequila Sunrise in Bayside, Queens and it was yummy. To my surprise... the Mariachis came by and sang Happy Birthday to me as they placed a HUGE sombrero on my head and gave me a slice of cake. Jose had them play a few other "rancheras" to me and I really enjoyed it. I noticed that I had tears rolling down my face at one point as I listened to the sweet words of one of the songs....this is rare for me because I am one of those people who listens to a song, sings the words, and really only feels the beat. I NEVER let the words to songs sink in to where I actually follow the story of the song. Anyway... the Mariachis were great. A few of my other friends and I got together to celebrate and I had some nice lunches and dinners with them. Yay... I am an adult now...oh wait... was that supposed to start at 18?
