My parents have become REALLY good friends with a Mexican family that live in Chino Valley. They get together often and even consider my parents like grandparents for their children. It is pretty cute and my parents are great missionaries to them. Well, I went over to their house on Saturday morning to make Tamales and Salsa. It was a fun experience!
Norma spreading the masa on the softened corn husks......
Norma and Jesus filling and folding the tamales......
We made bean, cheese and jalapeño tamales as well as red chili tamales....yum!
Then we made some Salsa Verde........
We roasted the tomatillos, jalapeños, and garlic before blending it into a salsa.......
Our last project about killed me! We made a red enchilada sauce and we had to roast dry peppers before blending them. We did it outside because the smoke was sooooooo strong that we would have killed everyone inside their house......we almost died from coughing outside....strong stuff!
Jesus and Monica (their daughter) by the Christmas tree in their house.....

Mmmmm. That's something I love about you and your family. You're so good at making friends and sharing traditions.
oh- yummy! my fam would have a tamale festival every new years and make millions of these thingys. they would take FOREVER! my mom would get up early to roast all the chiles then blend them, strain them and add them to the masa and beef. We would put raisins in the beef and they were so good. we also would make refried bean and cheese ones that were pretty dang good, and of course the corn/hot pepper jack cheese ones are to die for. we would have people giving up on the spreading left and right- but then theyd be back for the eating part. i wanted to be the little red hen and eat them all myself, but i never one that one. Ian was a great helper! miss him too! so- im super jelous that you got to make tamales and i didn't! ;(
bet they were delicious!beak
