I was invited to a really fun party in the beginning of July. This is my friend, Salma, who I work with at school. She is a wonderful and truly sweet person. Extremely genuine! She told me it was her sons first birthday party. It was 4th of July weekend and so I went thinking that the party would be a typical "summer" BBQ. I soon found out that I was very wrong!
It ended up being a tented event with catering and LOTS of other frills. The most exciting part for me was seeing all of the BEAUTIFUL clothes that the women had. Salma and her family have been in the states for YEARS but they are originally from Pakistan and Afghanistan. I had never seen her in "typical dress" from her country and I thought she looked beautiful. These dresses were amazing! Crystals, sequins, silk, mesh, etc.....wow!
Salma and one of her MANY cousins.....

This is
Salma's aunt as she danced for the crowd. I thought that her earrings were really neat.

The dancing part of the party was very different from most parties that I have been to. Instead of everyone dancing together (all at one time), a few people dance together and it is kind of like a little show. Everyone sits around the dance floor and watches. Their dance moves tell the story of the song that is playing. It was really cool!

This woman was a WONDERFUL dancer. I sensed that she is kind of the "star" dancer at all of their family parties. She was all over the dance floor and she was
EXTREMELY dramatic and fun. Everyone enjoyed watching her dance.

Here are two of my favorite outfits of the night. The girl above
didn't want me to show her face. That is obvious, right?! Ha! This picture
doesn't really do her dress justice. It was amazing! The mesh overlay was COVERED in pearls, sequins, and crystals. The dress below was pure sequins and I thought it was very impressive.

It was a great "cultural" experience. I felt really honored to have been invited. There were probably 80 people there (maybe more). Everyone there was family
except for me and one other girl from school. Thanks for inviting me
Salma...I had a GREAT time!
