Real Figs...not Fig Newtons!

Just an afternoon snack! Yum! Summers in New York means picking yummy figs and loving it. It is something that is new for me since I never saw them growing until I came here. There are TONS of Greek and Italian people here and the fig tree is a coveted plant. If you don't have one growing in your yard.....then you want to know someone who will give you a branch so that you can get your own tree going. I pass fig trees all of the time but I am not daring enough to pick them from someone elses bush. In fact, I have one growing out my window but it belongs to my Chinese neighbors. Well, I have fallen into some great luck the last couple years. Many of the Korean students that I teach are living in homes where the previous owners had planted figs. They don't really care about the fruit so they let me pick them. I haven't done it much this year but today I really scored. I decided to come home and bust out the cheese and honey. It was a great snack! Thanks for the figs....free is always better than the $8.99 a pound price at my local market. Ha!
